love and loss

Laguna and Raine's relationship are a classic case of opposites attract. He's from a big city. She's from a small town. Laguna is loud and silly while Raine is reserve and down to earth. Though the two deny their own feelings at first, they eventually fall in love. One night, Laguna and Raine met eachother under the moonlight sky where he shyly propose to her (see header for scene).

Laguna, Raine, and Ellone lived a happy peaceful life but it quickly changed when Estharian soldiers came back and kidnapped Ellone to be the successor for Sorceress Adel. Devastated that he could not protect Ellone, Laguna along with his friends Kiros and Ward, journey off to find Ellone. Laguna did not know Raine was pregnant (he did not know of the birth of their son, Squall, until much much later). Even if he did, I believe he would still go and rescue Ellone... I don't believe for a second that Raine would ask him to stay. It isn't in her character to say such a thing. Ellone is their adopted daughter and I believe Raine would fought just as hard to bring Ellone home.

Laguna eventually did write stories of his travels while looking for Ellone. Then after rescuing Ellone and sealing Sorceress Adel into space, he sent Ellone home alone to Winhill, back to Raine. People saw him as the hero and leader of the revolution against Adel and chose him to be President of Esthar. Laguna decided to stay there to help clean up the mess that Adel built up and left, not knowing about Raine's eventual death and their newborn baby. In hindsight, this was one of Laguna's biggest mistake. He regretted not going back home with Ellone that time and because he didn't, he never saw Raine alive again.

Ellone was sent back home to Raine and the newborn baby, Squall. It is not clear what exactly caused Raine's death. Ellone mentioned that Raine kept calling out for Laguna and wanted to show him their newborn baby so it has been speculated that it was either complication after giving birth or from a broken heart (why most of the present-time Winhill elders are wary of strangers as they believe Laguna, an outsider, broke the heart of Raine's).

Shortly after Raine died, Ellone and Squall were sent to an orphanage (Cid and Edea Kramer). Due to Ellone's "Connect" powers, she was sought out by Doctor Odine who wanted to research her powers. To protect her, Cid and Edea sent Ellone off into a ship (White SeeD ship) to hide. This separation from Squall would be the underlying cause of Squall's distant personality.

Raine was dead. Ellone was sent away to hide. Laguna was made President of Esthar. Squall was alone... More than ever.
